Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is one of the two Federal Institutes of Technology in Switzerland with main emphasis on teaching and research in Engineering Sciences and Technologies. The research teams at EPFL participating this NoE are active in research and teaching in the field of multimedia information processing, coding, and management.

As the leading group, Prof. Ebrahimi's team is made of 4 post-doc researchers, 9 graduate researchers pursuing PhD theses, and and average of 10 undergraduate students. Other research groups at EPFL are part of a newly established Signal Processing Center called Euler Center of Signal Processing with more than a dozen Professors and their research teams, among which one can mention the groups of tenior faculties, Prof. Martin Vetterli, Prof. Michael Unser, Prof. Hervé Bourlard, Prof. Sabine Susstrunck, in addition to Prof. Touradj Ebrahimi, as well as three assistant professors, Prof. Pascal Frossard, Prof. Jean-Philippe Thiran, and Prof. Pierre Vandergheynst, all with research and teaching activities directly relevant to PetaMedia. The research topics span through three highly interconnected disciplines ofmultimedia signal processing, namely, compression, processing, and security.

The team of Prof. Ebrahimi is also very active in MPEG and JPEG standardisations, where it contributes both at the technical and leadership levels. In addition to Euler Center of Signal Processing, EPFL is also very active in several other centers of excellence in Switzerland, namely, Montreux Jazz Festival Archive Project, National Center of Excellence MICS on mobile self-organized ad-hoc networks, and National Center of Excellence IM2 on interactive multimodal information management. EPFL also has a longs experience in participation of European Commission coordinated research projects.
